The winter Dungeness crab fishery has experienced a large number of fatalities and vessel losses along the Oregon/Washington coasts. Due to the high incidence of loss and property, this industry has been identified as a high-risk fishery. In support of Coast Guard Pacific Area Command's Operation Safe Return, Marine Safety Office Portland, Group/Air Station Astoria, Group/Air Station North Bend, and 13th District Fishing Vessel Safety staff jointly developed an enforcement and education outreach initiative dubbed Operation Safe Crab 2000. This effort was aimed at reducing loss of life and property in the 2000-2001 Washington/Oregon Dungeness crab fishery. This article provides an overview of the goals, scope of activity, boarding results, and conclusions reached relative to Operation Safe Crab 2000. |
