The history of fishing vessel safety has been an ongoing struggle between the rights of fiercely independent individuals willing or resigned to accept the hazards of their profession, and of those from within and outside the industry who attempt to mitigate the extreme dangers of retrieving the ocean's bounty. This article provides an historical overview of numerous initiatives intended to raise the level of fishing vessel safety through development of standards consistent with other sectors of the maritime industry. Unfortunately, few of these efforts have succeeded. |
