| 摘要： | This article provides an overview of waterways management in the U.S. Coast Guard's Ninth District by the Great Lakes Marine Transportation System (MTS). The geographic profile of this region's waterways is described as are the goals and challenges of the Ninth District's MTS efforts. The Great Lakes region is one of the most congested waterways in the world, with significant commercial and recreational traffic in close proximity. It is also one of the most highly sensitive ecosystems in the world. A large degree of partnership between federal, regional, and local entities in the Ninth District MTS will be necessary to ensure that it continues to provide an economically valuable and environmentally safe means of transportation into the 21st century. |
