摘要: This article provides a status report of the U.S. Coast Guard implementation of an automatic identification system (AIS). The AIS is a shipborne transponder-based navigation safety system that enables the efficient exchange of data such as name, type, position, course, speed, navigation status, dimensions, or type of cargo among ships and between ships and shore stations. The AIS will form an important part of the Coast Guard's Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) Ports and Waterways Safety System (PAWSS) acquisition project to aid in providing safety to a community of ports and waterways. The evolution of this acquisition, from the conceptual stage to the anticipated installation schedule, is described.
