This paper, authored by a member of the Transportation Research Board Committee on Strategic Management, provides an overview of issues effecting the future of transportation management, such as what are the forces driving change in the marketplace, what new competencies will be needed to meet them, and how will the industry adapt to meet these changes. Public participation in transportation planning and the impact of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 and the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century of 1998 are discussed. Other aspects of strategic transportation management policy such as consensus building are also elaborated on. |
