Geoenvironmental and geotechnical engineers are concerned with the composition and fabric of natural soils, their surface and pore-fluid chemistry, the physicochemical and biological processes that govern soil behavior, and the ways in which these characteristics and processes affect the hydrologic and geotechnical properties of soils. This paper, produced by the Transportation Research Board Committee on Physicochemical Phenomena in Soils, deals with the problems, past and current activities, state of current practice and technology, and goals for the 21st century of the transportation industry in dealing with chemical effects on subsurface soil structures. A variety of issues pose challenges for professionals in this field including the need to remediate contaminated subsurface profiles, the impact of corrosion on the metallic components of subsurface elements, and, more recently, brownfield rehabilitation. |
