For many years weather information has been an integral part of planning and performing winter road maintenance. This has enforced the development of many sophisticated weather products. One step to achieve accurate, more detailed weather information has been the building up existing road weather station networks, often together with the national meteorological institutes. All this is to get as detailed information as possible about the condition of the roads at the moment and for the near future. But at the same time there is a need to minimize costs. One of the options examined in this paper is to find new methods to produce the forecasts in a more rational way, where the forecaster still, to a high degree, can influence the results. One of the most important pieces of information as help for an efficient winter road maintenance work is good road surface temperature prediction. |
