BC Transit has restored its first Dennis Trident double-decker to original red, white and blue livery as the western Canadian undertaking prepares to replace them with new Alexander Dennis Enviro500s. The ten 12m Tridents, with Duple Metsec bodies, Cummins M11 engines and Voith D864.3E transmission, cost C$590,000 (£340,000) each and entered service in Victoria, Vancouver Island in August 2000. They are due to be retired early this year. Each replacement costs approximately C$1 million (£580,000). It bought 19 more in 2002, followed by 40 Enviro500s, one of them a hybrid with Cummins/Allison drive and three acquired secondhand from OC Transpo in Ottawa in 2013. BC Transit also purchased 33 Plaxton Pointer-bodied 10.9m Dennis Dart SLFs between 2000 and 2002. Alexander Dennis will take the repainted Trident in part exchange with a view to it eventually going to a museum. |
