The late 1970s and early 1980s brought a new - but short-lived - era in coach travel from the UK to various European holiday destinations, mainly in northern Spain, the south of France and northern Italy. I took three such holidays and have vivid memories of them, not all of them happy. This was before the age of inexpensive air travel and internet holiday booking. A variety of enterprising tour companies started offering competitively priced holidays in attractive Mediterranean and Adriatic destinations with travel by coach and accommodation in either tents or caravans. My bases in Lido di Jesolo on the northern Adriatic and Antibes in the south of France suddenly gave me access by local trains, buses and one-day excursions to places such as Venice, San Marino, Austrian lakes, Nice, Cannes, Monaco and Ventimiglia on the French/Italian border which had a famous weekday market. The campsites were also of an extremely high standard, compared with what was available in the UK The good news was a very cheap break in some of the most desirable European holiday destinations with warm sunny weather almost a given in the summer season. |
