The only bus operating in Leeds on Christmas Day was one of Bradley McMullan's preserved Black Prince vehicles, 1996 Optare Prisma-bodied Mercedes-Benz O405 P441 SWX. It operated a free cross-city service every 2hr on route X51 connecting St James's University Hospital and Tingley Mills at Morley, the home town of the Black Prince company from 1969 to 2005. The bus was equipped with hand cleansers and for passengers to be socially distanced, as Covid-19 precautions demanded. This was the sixth successive year that the service has operated. 'We carried 23 passengers throughout the day, significantly fewer than usual but more than I had expected to use the service,' says McMullen. Our picture shows it on an almost deserted high-level spur link on to the M621 near Holbeck, with the city centre behind. |
