摘要: If you lived in north-west London in the 40 peak years of coach holidays, excursions and annual seaside breaks, you might well have travelled by one of three companies that served those populous suburbs - Valliant, Cronshaw and Venture. Companies united in common ownership from the 1960s as that golden age was ending. Maurice Bateman and Chris Beer have researched their intertwined histories for this well illustrated (colour and black and white) and highly readable account not just of the companies, their people and vehicles, but also of Britons' leisure pursuits before jet travel and package holidays became mass market experiences. Both authors grew up in north-west London, have a lifelong interest in buses and coaches, and before retiring over 10 years ago had careers in the industry. Bateman was a well-known coach salesman, with Plaxton and several prominent dealerships; before joining London Transport, Beer spent two summers working for one of these operators. The companies' founders were the equivalent of today's tech entrepreneurs. They used the latest automotive technology to meet the travel needs of new suburbs in an area now bounded by the M4, Ml and M25.
