Jim Young has delved once more into his black and white photograph collection to share 180 of those he took nearly 60 years ago along with nine colour views from around the same time by the late John Boylett. These focus on the independents in the south-easternmost counties north of the Thames estuary, but also include nine of the municipal double-deckers of Colchester, a few examples of Eastern Counties and Eastern National, plus the Cambridgeshire independents Premier Travel and Burwell & District. As with his other recent albums, this captures an era still dominated by halfcab double- and single-deckers, many of them acquired secondhand from major fleets, and reveals the disintegrating remains of retired machines found at the operators' bases. Among these, a visit to Viceroy Coaches at Saffron Walden in February 1962 found nine geese passing the recognisable remnants of a Thurgood-bodied Bedford OB retired four years earlier. |
