Cummins is following its move into battery electric drivelines with a long-term commitment to power buses with hydrogen fuel-cells. The American-owned diesel engine builder, which made a profit in 2019 of US$2.3billion (£1.7billion), is bearing the initially unprofitable cost of developing and acquiring expertise in the hydrogen market in which it expects most transport sector demand in the current decade will come from bus and train operators. It expects to lose USS500million (£370million) on new power developments between 2020 and 2022, which it sees as a modest sum to invest in a future in which demand for diesel engines will fall. |
