As the transition period comes to an end and the UK finally leaves the European Union on 31 December 2020,1 am reminded of a celebration event in which I participated 47 years ago, in January 1973, five days after the country joined what then was the European Economic Community, better known by many as the Common Market. This was Drive into Europe, a much publicised veteran and vintage vehicle rally from London to Brussels which was sponsored by the Department of the Environment, The Financial Times, British Leyland and BP fuels. It was an invitation-only event, with all 65 participating vehicles having been selected by veteran and vintage clubs. |
