Gonghe-Yushu is a 627km-long Expressway in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau built by the Chinese Government as a "lifeline" supporting the reconstruction of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture after the Yushu Earthquake in 2010. The region is characterised by an extremely unstable permafrost with average temperatures ranging from -1.5℃ to -0.5℃ and an elevation between 4,000m and 5,000m. These permafrost conditions have significant engineering implications, with distress rates resulting from thaw-settlement and frost-heave that can reach or exceed 30%. No expressway has ever been constructed in any other permafrost region on account of the immense potential risk from thaw. |
