Alcohol ignition interlocks have been welcomed by many as a major weapon in controlling recidivist drink drivers. It is also recognised that there are many issues to be resolved before they can be unreservedly accepted. Tasmanian infringement and accident data have been used to provide a preliminary assessment of the benefits of alcohol ignition interlocks, by attempting the following questions: · are there sufficient numbers of recidivist drink drivers to warrant specific attention? · to what extent do recidivist drink drivers continue to drive while disqualified? · to what extent do recidivist drink drivers continue to drink drive while disqualified? · to what extent are recidivist drink drivers involved in accidents as drivers while disqualified? · to what extent are recidivist drink drivers involved in accidents as drink drivers while disqualified? The Austroads guidelines governing the use of interlocks, have also been considered. The questions investigated have been: · the two target groups nominated in the Austroads guidelines account for what proportion of all recidivist drink drivers? · are the Austroads guidelines appropriate to recidivist drink drivers’ illicit driving patterns? |
