All key players in every region of Western Australia were thoroughly consulted before any moves were made to implement the program. Police and health staff called on their contacts giving them an open invitation to take part and then began targeting Aboriginal elders, community leaders, wardens and local role models for support of this project. Many proved interested and willing to help their community own its road trauma problems and seek solutions. Among them were Aboriginal health workers, Aboriginal Police Liaison Officers, Aboriginal Medical Service staff, community nurses, regional health directors, community nursing directors, regional health liaison officers, local health promotion officers, football stars and prominent local women. Some had never driven a motor vehicle before and others had been banned from driving for life and wanted to make up for past mistakes. Initial consultation was conducted face to face, one on one or in small groups. When the project was first launched in the Kimberley region, meetings were held from Kununurra to Broome in five locations. Similar attention was given to each new region. |
