摘要：	Drugs and alcohol have in the past, been an increasing problem with respect to road and workplace fatalities. Technological advancements over the past 10 years, together with public awareness, has enabled the science of drug and alcohol detection to be reliably implemented into practice and successfully reduce the number of related deaths globally. Breath analysis is an internationally accepted method of detecting for alcohol impairment. The combination of electronic screening devices and evidential instruments has resulted in a greater efficiency of police roadside testing and in effect combated against a rising road toll. Screening devices having ability to detect the presence of alcohol to a high degree of accuracy has enabled the introduction of policing methods to effectively increase the test rate of drivers whilst still detecting DUI offenders. With the introduction of dual sensor technologies into evidential instruments, namely IR spectroscopy and electrochemical fuel cell, the level of certainty of test results has increased. Further advancements in evidential instrumentation have enhanced the confidence level of test results. To combat against high alcohol and repeat offenders who do not respond to the traditional methods to curb drink driving, ignition interlock systems together with structured programs have been implemented effectively in the USA and Canada to further reduce the drink driver problem. Countries such as Australia and Sweden are conducting trials to determine the viability of such programs. In addition to the effects of alcohol, there are many drugs available which have the potential to impair a person’s performance. Screening devices using urine or saliva to detect the presence of a particular drug of abuse are reasonably reliable and can be readily implemented into the legal and industrial environments.
