The safety of children as pedestrians is everyone’s responsibility. The importance of ensuring that children have the safest possible journey when travelling to and from school is currently being addressed through a program that involves, parents, schools, police, local government and the Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW. The program, Safer Routes to School, is a behavioural based approach to improving pedestrian travel by children by identifying key elements that may contribute to a child being injured whilst travelling to and from school, and implementing strategies to minimise these risks. Information gained from assessing children’s travel patterns to and from school, auditing the environment in which the child travels and conducting a behavioural observation study in each school environment, form the basis of the School Action Plan which is developed by each schools’ Safety Committee. Parents are also supported throughout the program with information and resources to assist them in determining a safe route for their child to travel to and from school. This paper discussed the development and implementation of the Safer Routes to School Program and the relationship of parents, schools and the RTA in improving the safety of children travelling to and from school. |
