Queensland Transport's data analysis of crashes involving one or more of the crash contributors speed, drink driving, failure to wear a seatbelt and fatigue found that one or more of these four contributors were found in more than 40%of fatal crashes and more than 20%of hospitalisation crashes throughout 1994-1997. The data also revealed a propensity for more than one of these contributors to occur together in a single incident. This led the Department's public education area to propose that a campaign that addressed the four behaviours as a group may be a strategy for trying to raise awareness of the dangers of these behaviours as a group. The Department's 1997 Christmas campaign, run in conjunction with Police and the state's automobile association, thus focussed on the Fatal 4 - speeding, drink driving, failure to wear seatbelts and fatigue. It involved public education and enforcement campaigns. This paper explains the processes involved and the data analysis behind the Fatal 4 campaign. |
