摘要: Notw ithstanding the considerable success in road trauma reduction w ithin N SW in recent years, road crashes during 1997 still resulted in 576 deaths and more than 25,000 injuries, with a community cost of approximately $2 billion. As a stakeholder in the NSW G overnment Road Safety 2000 S trategy, our Police Service is committed to meeting the targets of that plan, by w orking tow ards reducing road fatalities to 500 or less by the year 2000. In seeking to achieve that goal we must be careful not to become complacent and expect the achievements of the past to continue as a matter of course. The reductions resulting from the introduction of random breath testing, seatbelts, speed cameras and the like have largely plateaued and we now need to look to new initiatives to continue the downward trend.1960 1970 That task should not and cannot be performed by any one agency alone. H ence the importance of the partnership formalised in Road Safety 2000, between the New S outh Wales P olice S ervice and other road safety stakeholders, which extends from the government level through to local communities.
