Main constitutive structures in port and harbour facilities are generally made of steel and/or concrete. Those construction materials will exhibit superior performances in marine environments, but are difficult to be well maintained in good conditions; nevertheless they are subjected to extremely severe atmosphere from the viewpoint of materials deterioration. Therefore, it is important to build a rational maintenance strategy during the service life for satisfying required performances. This paper presents the development of a decision-making support system for maintenance management of existing port and harbour structures. The durability and ultimate load carrying capacity of a structure are taken as the main indices in the system. For predicting the deterioration process, calculation models were proposed. Methods for repair and rehabilitation currently available were gathered and analyzed to form the database. Using the database and predicted future deterioration, several alternatives for remedial work will be offered and the most effective one among them will be proposed based on the lifecycle cost simulation. As an example, the maintenance management system proposed was applied to an open piled pier and then the accuracy of the system was verified. While it is necessary to upgrade the system from the viewpoint of the deterioration prediction and the accuracy, the management system presented here can contribute to cost reduction for investment through rational maintenance work. |
