The components making up the picture of ALWC are diverse and specialised and so as an independent subject it remains fragmented. The paper pulls together these components and presents them as a collection of practical points to be considered by port and waterway management and their engineers in coming to terms with the very serious and acute challenge that ALWC poses. After a brief introduction a history of steel piles in marine structures is followed by details of studies that have been carried out. The significance of steel piles and their importance literally as the foundations of a port’s infrastructure is demonstrated. The benefit of the use of steel is outlined and the concept of vertical zones of exposure is explained with corrosion rates given. ALWC is defined and general characteristics are described. Protection against ALWC is explained and information given on repair criteria and current practice along with prevention measures and complications such as tides and difficult access. A holistic approach to safety is examined and the need for environmental impact assessment is stressed. There is an outline of practical methods to facilitate project management with an emphasis on the importance of quality control, planned periodic inspection and maintenance and a description consulting engineering remits, contractors skills and innovations, and the input of specialised professions. The concept that early intervention makes economic sense is demonstrated by way of an example that includes realistic figures. Future considerations are outlined prior to a brief summary. References and further information details are addended. |
