Major port projects were being developed in the flourishing Argentina of the end of the 19th century. During the 1880s, the city of Buenos Aires started the construction of its new port: Puerto Madero. This port, which provided the city with state-of-the-art port infrastructure, became an area of elegant offices, hotels and restaurants during the past decade. Some years later, Argentina undertook another ambitious port project a few kilometers further south off the first one but outside the urban area of activities which was to operate as a port longer than Puerto Madero. This was partly because of its peripheral location, but also because it was powerfully renewed by a number of bold and visionary projects developed one century after its construction. The writing intends to describe the plans and works that transformed an old, obsolete and pollutant port center into a modern cargo transfer center, as well as the specific aspects of the major past and present works. The most important works are the construction of container yards and container and ro - ro berths, the development of a logistics services center and a railroad transfer terminal and the widening of the channel. Dock Sud is in the process of transformation following a highly ambitious work plan. It is still a contaminated area but it is no longer a pollution producer. A lot has been done and there is still a lot to be done in the future. |
