The development and operations of ports in the current environment sees never ending challenges. Complicated by their public ownership, ports are forced to walk a very thin line between the idealism of commercial operation whilst serving public shareholders. Greater emphasis on sustainability, whilst not unrealistic, draws criticism from purists and industrialists, as ports strive to satisfy the wants of both stakeholders. The maritime industry, whilst tackling its own unique industrial problems creates immediate demands which can relegate a port's standing from major to minor with one cancelled service. Simultaneously, the aging working population threatens the accumulated knowledge base of organisations which depend on their history for continued improvement. This paper examens some of these conflicts which ports face, striving for a balanced, holistic rational that delivers an operation that does not compromise competition whilst fostering a standardisation in system development. |
