Capping of dredged material is a disposal alternative that is commonly used for sediments dredged from navigation projects. In harbour conditions the planning of construction of an underwater sand embankment in many cases has to start from the top of a soft-sediment pond. The sediments surface in this case was about 18m below the water level. The considerably low initial shear strength, combined with the magnitude of the surcharge imposed by the 25m high embankment, present unusual engineering problems. A staged con-struction philosophy of design has been implemented. However, staged construction on its own led to an unfeasible construction schedule due to the consolidation characteristics of the sediments. For that reason, partial improvement by Deep Soil Mixing techniques has been also considered in order to improve the stability and to reduce the total construction time. This paper focuses on the geotechnical aspects of design. |
