摘要: During the early 1990s an array of sea level and climate monitoring stations was established in the Southwest Pacific. The stations consist of data loggers, two independent means of sea level detection, wind speed and direction, barometric pressure and air and water temperature sensors. They communicate via satellite and telephone with the central data processing unit at the National Tidal Facility Australia (NTFA). Results show regional scale features in all parameters. To the Northwest of Australia there has been a high rate of sea level rise, much larger than the global secular rate of +1 to +2 mm/year. This is attributed to a decadal 搒losh?mode of the Pacific Ocean and it is hypothesised that the rates will return to normal over the next ten or so years. There has been a regional decrease in atmospheric pressure that is large enough to become a significant contributor to the observed rates of sea level rise at some sites. Air and water temperatures have also risen significantly, but are expected to ease within the next decade. The sea level anomalies observed prior to and during the 1997/1998 El Ni駉 show changes of up to 40 cm which has implications for the operation of shallow water ports in Australia. The effects are from the Gulf of Carpentaria anticlockwise around Australia to Tasmania. Ports along the East of Australia do not seem to suffer as much from this effect.
