Background : Most of the container cranes in Kobe Port was seriously damaged by the Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake in1995. When Ohi container terminal in Tokyo Port was improved to the highly strengthened one, it was essential that the crane could withstand similar levels to the earthquake which occurred in Kobe Port. Base Isolation System : The container crane is the rigid gantry type with dimensions 1050 ton in weight, 30 m in span, 18 m of wheel base, 50 m of outreach and 15 m of back reach. Container cranes are flexible steel frame structures with a high center of gravity. Therefore the base isolation is better than the rigid reinforcement from the view point of earthquake resistance. The base isolation system was designed to changes the natural period of the crane from 2 sec to 4 sec which decreases to one-fourth of the acceleration response of the crane. The base isolation system developed consists of the devices of sliding, spring, damping and triggering. It is installed between the lower end of the leg frame and the wheel in each of the four legs. Performance of The System: The effect of the base isolation system has been verified by the shaking table tests using 1/15 scaled models and numerical simulations. In case of the most unstable condition, the maximum ground acceleration of 200 Gals was applied. The horizontal acceleration of the crane reached to 600 Gals and the wheels derailed when the system was not operating. However, when the system was operating the acceleration was 150 Gals and the wheels did not derail. Even if 400 Gals was applied which is equivalent to the Kobe earthquake, the crane was safety. Shaking Tests were also conducted by mounting large shakers on the real crane. The results showed that the increase of the natural period and the decrease of acceleration response were the same as designed. Conclusions: Container cranes equipped with the base isolation system can be used to transport critical cargo during disasters. They can withstand serious earthquakes, such as that in Kobe Port, without the frames buckling or their wheels derailing. |
