摘要: Bar Beach, located on the southern extremity of Victoria Island within Lagos, Nigeria, has been subjected to erosion and consequential landward regression of the shoreline since the construction of breakwaters to protect Lagos Harbour in the early part of the 20th century. The construction of the breakwaters interrupted the natural net easterly movement of sediments along the shoreline caused by ocean wave action. The result of the interference was sediment deposition and the formation of an extensive beach on the western side of the harbour entrance and erosion on the (eastern) Bar Beach side. This has over the years resulted in extensive losses of sand in the nearshore area at Bar Beach, the loss of the beach amenity and damage to infrastructure. Although a variety of solutions are available to solve the Bar Beach erosion problem, all solutions require significant amounts of funding to be successfully implemented. The difficulty in obtaining funding for such projects, especially in Africa, lead the project team to an innovative alternative whereby partial financing of the protection works is generated by simultaneously creating developable property through land reclamation. In this way, a threat and liability is turned into an opportunity and an asset! The restoration of Bar Beach is thus essentially approached from a real estate perspective through the reclamation of some of the land lost to the sea and making this available for the development of a Waterfront and future Tourism Gateway to Lagos and Nigeria. The paper discusses some of the studies that have been carried out during the prefeasibility investigations of this project, focusing on technical aspects.
