North Port at Port Klang has grown tremendously over the last decade, especially in terms of containerised traffic. In order for North Port to remain competitive, a major upgrading exercise has been instituted. This includes the reconstruction of Berths 12 and 13, which are currently general cargo berths, into container berths. The reconstruction of these wharves involves the systematic demolition of the existing wharf structure. This is then followed by a systematic installation of new piles and a new reinforced concrete deck slab. The uniqueness of the new structural configurations lies in the sensitive geotechnical setting of the site as well as a need to include design life concept for the structure. The soft sediments accumulated beneath the existing wharves render significant geotechnical risks with regards to the stability of the sediment mound and its effect on the structure and the adjacent berths. The durability of the concrete utilised within the new structure as well as in the new piles are essential to ensure compliance to the design life requirement of 50 years. This paper describes the geotechnical risks attached to the project and the steps taken to mitigate these risks. The durability of the reinforced concrete structure is also enhanced through material specifications and development of appropriate structural form. The combination of these measures is seen as essential in ensuring compliance to the design life requirement of the new structure. |
