As a result of its unparalleled economic and population growth since 1950, the Emirate of Dubai, located on the Arabian (Persian) Gulf, has seen a commensurate growth in both traffic volumes and use of public transport, along with significant congestion, sharply reduced parking availability in urban centers, and increasing numbers of roadway incidents. To better address personal and commercial mobility needs with respect to this incredible growth, Dubai Municipality (DM) has initiated a visionary Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program known as ITS Dubai. The program incorporates the deployment of transportation-related technology and telecommunications applications in the Emirate, with future connectivity to similar systems in the neighboring Emirates and other States in the Arabian Gulf region. The initial deployment of ITS in Dubai represents the first metropolitan deployment of integrated ITS activities in the Middle East. The deployment involves the concurrent, integrated development of management and operations-oriented activities and traveler information services. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the integration strategy for tying together real-time traffic and incident management and traveler information, including information provided to in-vehicle subscribers. The strategy is being developed through the system engineering process, beginning with definition of a concept of operations and continuing with requirements development, system architecture development, and development of a detailed design, followed by system integration, verification and validation activities. |
