The TRACKER transit operations management and passenger information system has been fully implemented for the Island Explorer system at Acadia National Park (ANP), as of the 2002 summer season. Similar advanced transit technology has been used in other transit systems, but this is one of the first opportunities to adapt the technology for the unique operational requirements of a small transit system operating in and around a National Park. Also, it is one of the first deployments with multiple stakeholders, including the US Department of the Interior, local communities and the US Department of Transportation. There have been many challenges throughout the development and deployment of the TRACKER system. In particular, establishing the required mobile data communications in the park's mountainous terrain required a significant institutional and technical effort. This paper provides an overview of this deployment, the capabilities of the system, the implementation approach and some of the challenges that have been encountered and overcome. |
