Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) through partnership with ThomTech Design developed a freeway management system at the I-90 and US 71 interchange at Jackson, Minnesota. Currently Mn/DOT is utilizing manually operated gate systems for directing traffic off rural Interchanges and prohibiting access during unsafe diving conditions such as sever snowstorms and major incidents. Mn/DOT installed an automated system using of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies. The test location is I-90 and US 71 interchange at Jackson, Minnesota. The system will be managed from Mn/DOT's Windom Office. The I-90 Gate System consists of four subsystems identified as follows; (A) traffic management subsystem, (B) communications, (C) control and monitor, (D) detection and sensor. The I-90 Gate Closure System was installed in late January and early February and was operational during the latter half of the 2002 winter season. The system passed acceptance test during April 2002. The final report will be available July 2002. |
