This study explores feasibility on introduction of all-way stop control system utilizing intelligent transport systems (ITS) technologies to enhance efficiency and safety at unsignalized intersections. An operational and functional concept of intelligent all-way stop controlled intersection is provided in order for vehicles to stop and get the right of ways based on the intelligent system utilizing loop detectors, LED traffic signs, and a controller specifically designed for right of ways assignments. A prototype and warrants related to traffic volumes for the implementation of intelligent all-way stop control system are demonstrated. In addition, a detail procedure for the implementation of the system is presented in this study, including guidelines for the revisions of the roadway and traffic law and measures of effectiveness for analyzing the system. Findings from this study suggest that the proposed intelligent all-way stop control system would be implemented in improving both efficiency and safety at unsignalized intersections with the goal of higher driver compliance towards stopping at the intersection and getting right of ways. |
