This paper outlines some of the major human factors issues that are critical to the successful deployment, operation and acceptability to drivers of on-board Intelligent Transportation Systems, specifically ADAS. These include such issues as the degree of driver control, integration of workload management and safety warnings, modality and timing of information presentation as well as personalization and system adaptation. The philosophy, and some of the driving simulator-based research that is being carried out by Motorola Labs to resolve some of these design issues related to the Driver Advocate system is also described. |
