Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Window (VRPTW) is concerned with design of a minimum-cost vehicle route on which the customers are serviced during their allowable or requested service time of periods or time windows. In the real world, travel time on a street network varies on different periods of time such as peak hours vs. off peak hours. Time-Dependent VRPTW (TDVRPTW) extends the VRPTW to account for real traffic conditions including occurrence of traffic congestion and traffic flow variation. This paper presents an approach to integrate a VRPTW heuristic algorithm with a dynamic traffic simulation model to solve the TDVRPTW. The developed traffic simulation model is used as a practical estimator of the real travel time, and travel time distribution profile produced based on field observations is generated for each link. The developed TDVRPTW system consists of a route-based microscopic traffic simulation model, a dynamic optimal path algorithm, and a TDVRP. |
