This paper presents a simultaneous engineering and rapid prototyping approach that was applied to conceptualise an in-vehicle HMI of an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) within the EU research project IN-ARTE. Computer simulations of the human machine interface (HMI) and of driving simulations were applied to conceptualise the HMI in an early stage of the project. Expert and user tests were performed and valuable hints for the optimisation of the HMI concept could be identified. Among other things the user tests showed that automatic intervention, which was not considered as acutely dangerous (e.g. longitudinal control before intersections), was not fully accepted and it could be observed that subjects performing lane keeping tasks or being involved in a warning dialogue relied on the speech output of the system and did not read text messages on the display at all.
