Constructing architectures for ITS onboard system will be useful to understand the way in which ITS should be developed. This will help eliminate overlapping or contradicting systems to develop fully functional ITS services. In 1998, based on this understanding, the Association of Electronic Technology for Automobile Traffic and Driving prepared a hypothetical scenario of ITS services to develop the physical architecture, and specified which areas should be standardized under the instruction of Ministry of International Trade and Industry. First, the hypothetical scenario, which assumes the deployment and related technologies of ITS services from the viewpoint of automobiles, was prepared by surveying the social and technological trends for the 20 years to come. Then, based on this scenario and a logical architecture which was developed in 1997, a physical architecture for ITS onboard system which assumes physical models of three generations, namely, the model of 5 years from now (2003), that of 10 years from now (2008) and that of 20 years from now (2018) was developed. The physical architecture features detailed definitions of onboard functions. Finally, the architecture was analyzed to identify which technologies or systems should be standardized in terms of communication paths, information contents and onboard units.
