The purpose is to develop a road sensor system designed to detect obstacles and vehicles on the roads as part of the research on the AHS (Advanced Cruise-Assist Highway System), which constitutes one of the functions of Smart-way 2001. The research began in fiscal 1996 by the Obstacle Detection Working Group and the Vehicle Detection Working Group, which conducted studies on determining the exact specifications demanded of the sensors and the basic sensor performance required. The team identifies the problems that had to be solved in developing a system valid for practical purposes. These two working groups were integrated into the Road Sensor System Research Team in fiscal 1997. Working on a cruising vehicle detection algorithm and an obstacle detection algorithm, the Research Team fabricated a facility for obstacle detection, which was then tested on the test course of the Public Works Research Institute to obtain basic data. In fiscal 1998, another facility was built for cruising vehicle detection to collect basic data, and conduct an environmental test on the sensors using the rain and fog environmental facilities of the Public Works Research Institute of the MOC. The team also designed a road sensor system for user services as a step toward a demonstration designed to prove the practical usability of the AHS. In this paper, while collecting the result in order to realize service of AHS for 3 years, a view turned to the actual-proof experiment planned to fiscal 2000 are state. |
