XML, or eXtensible Markup Language, marries flexible, low cost fully- automated information exchange to the Web. XML is rapidly becoming the foundation for fully automated web-based transactions. One application is to enhance available traveler information services by easing the processing and integration of weather, construction, road condition and traffic information into trip-based traveler forecasts tailored to the individual user's planned route and time of travel. These trip- based forecasts would be analogous to the aviation route forecast produced for pilots based on their flight plans. This paper describes the TripInfo proof-of-concept prototype. TripInfo has successfully demonstrated the applicability of XML to traveler information integration. TripInfo uses XML to integrate traveler information from multiple sources, and provide trip-based, rather than link-based reports. The rational for the project, the project itself, and the lessons-learned are described. |
