摘要：	This paper presents the results of a review of commercial vehicle safety studies conducted to provide a better understanding of the current commercial vehicle safety problem. It outlines the approach used to conduct the review, summarizes the findings and provides suggestions for future studies based on the conclusions reached during the review. It is organized into the following topics: ?Introduction ?Approach ?Findings ?Conclusions ?Recommendations ?References The findings from the review identified strengths and weaknesses in safety analysis in the areas of subject selection, data collection and completeness of study. One strong area in crash data collection is the development of the same data on crashes for multiple years. All studies reviewed had strong statistical foundations. The review found that there was not much reuse of data from previously completed studies. The study also found that weaknesses in current data collection methods may lead to misinterpretation of the critical safety data. Current methods in choosing areas for study lead to overstudying some crash factors while understudying others. Most detailed studies also do not focus enough attention on the countermeasures necessary to mitigate specific crash causes. Data reuse and secondary analysis to verify the quality of routine data collection will improve the quality of the crash data and lead to better analysis results. Long-term retention of data for strategic planning will improve trend analysis. Data warehouse development will facilitate better access to data for strategic planning. Development of safety management strategy and planning tools will ensure that all of the key crash contributors and countermeasures are studied. The study concluded that improvements can be made in each of these areas. The study provides recommendations on additional areas of study and changes in practice and introduces some new techniques for focusing safety management efforts and research.
