This paper introduces a low cost collision avoidance system in a Wireless environment. This system uses existing GPS technology which makes it unique as compared to other systems in existence. The system is designed to provide the driver with an audio/visual warning of an approaching obstacle or if a collision is predicted. The proposed system is unique and has many potential benefits because it is not based on expensive Radar or sensor systems as opposed to existing systems. It uses GPS technology which is cheaper and promises improvement in position measuremnt accuracy. The system first uses a single mobile vehicle to test the collision with fixed objects, such as power poles, walls, and curbe. Additional mobiles can be added to the system with a minimal effort. Each vehicle is equiped with a differential GPS receiver feeding the GPS error correting terms to the regular GPS receiver, and wireless RF wireless transceiver. The DGPS feeds the location and velocity to the wireless transmitter and a central receiver system. The central receiver system operates much like an air traffic control room at at an airport and gives electronic warnings to vehicles via the two way wireless communication channel. A geocoded map of the roadways under tests is generated and the moving vehicle is displayed as a moving icon on the overlayed photo and the geocoded map. This is displayed in the control room in real time and a predictive algorithm based on vehicle location and velocity vector along with the geocoded route is generated to increase the DGPS accuracy. |
