摘要：	Safety is a crucial element of U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies. Combined, they spend billions of dollars each year in labour and materials for winter road maintenance operations. Often, a lack of quality road and weather condition information limits the ability of maintenance officials to reduce costs. Improvements in road and weather condition information are at the forefront of the efforts of FORETELL. Detailed road and weather conditions are expected to reduce unnecessary worker call-outs, the placement of de-icing materials and the need to use de-icing operations instead of anti-icing operations. These efforts should assist in reducing the costs winter maintenance while maintaining high levels of safety for the driving public. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102946.
