摘要: Surprisingly, little is known about how drivers behave in operational settings; this knowledge is needed to support the development and evaluation of in-vehicle systems. Naturalistic methods - those employing unobtrusive in-vehicle instrumentation to record driver behavior and vehicle performance over extended periods of time - are uniquely qualified to capture the richness of real-world events. Since these methods capture drivers in their operational environment under realistic conditions (e.g., daytime/nighttime, inclement weather etc.) and under threat of real risks, they provide a valid basis for studying naturalistic behaviors in a manner that other traditional experimental methods simply are not equipped to capture. This paper is based on the results of an expert panel that was convened to examine the methods and challenges of conducting naturalistic driving studies. Based on the experiences and lessons learned by the panel members, the paper provides pragmatic information that may help others plan and conduct naturalistic observation studies. It also outlines a number of research topics and objectives suitable for study using naturalistic techniques.
