It presents guiding principles and philosophies regarding the TMC’s traveler information program. It looks at an overview of TMC’s traveler information program including a system of 66 electronic message signs, sharing video and data with television and radio stations and internet providers, a traffic radio partnership with Minneapolis Public Schools, a traffic TV partnership with a private company, a traffic telephone service to provide pre-trip and enroute information (part of the Orion model deployment project), traffic internet via several private sector providers and traffic e-mail and pager services provided free to subscribers by the private sector. The paper describes the public education campaign used to increase user awareness and understanding of the program. Information is also presented on how market research is used to develop the program and evaluate the effectiveness of the services provided. It presents future plans for expansion of the traveler information program. This includes a new Regional Transportation Management Center, development of a statewide traveler information program and integration of the metro area traveler information program with statewide, national and international program. Finally, the overall effectiveness of the traveler information program is reiterated. This is a program that is customer based, is generating substantial road user benefits, is providing comprehensive services to the public and has high approval ratings. |
