The Virginia Tech Transportation Instructional Laboratory project is focused on the development of a laboratory to create a “hands-on” environment for learning the concepts, technologies, and applications in the area of advanced transportation systems. The need for a “hands-on” learning environment has been expressed in forums and programs such as the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Professional Capacity Building program. The development of the Transportation Instructional Laboratory directly addresses this need. The Transportation Instructional Laboratory, located at the Virginia Tech campus in Falls Church, Virginia, is a partnership of academia, government, and industry. The laboratory is providing education and training through a number of different venues including semester-long courses, short courses, and workshops. This variety in education and training mechanisms is responsive the different needs and backgrounds of the current and perspective students. Initially, the laboratory will target its training towards the ITS user services of Traffic Control, Incident Management, Pre-trip Travel Information, and Public Travel Security. The underlying theories and applied technologies which support these user services will be taught in the laboratory and will include the opportunity for students to physically interact with equipment such as cameras, wireless communication equipment, computer networks, and image processing systems. The key to the success of the Transportation Instructional Laboratory has been the involvement of partners from the closed circuit television (CCTV), transportation agencies including the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech). Although the laboratory is still under development several of its components are currently operational. As the laboratory implementation continues, it should prove to be a valuable resource for advanced transportation education and training in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. |
