The Internet is quickly becoming a vital tool for a variety of applications of Intelligent Transportation Systems. Currently there is a drive to develop interactive web pages on the Internet to help people plan multimodal transit trips across a region. The idea behind point-topoint itinerary planning is to allow patrons to receive all the information needed to complete a trip by transit, simply by specifying the origin and destination of the desired trip. By eliminating much of the hassle and guesswork from the often daunting task of planning a trip by transit, web pages which offer transit itinerary planning are helping to 搆nock down?some of the substantial barriers to transit use. The first research task for this paper included reviewing the trip itinerary planning options currently available on the Internet. The options for transit trip planning found at each of eight web sites were discussed in the paper. The second research task involved an on-line survey of the users of the Go Ventura web site, which, at the time of the survey, was the only Internet site in the United States providing point-to-point transit trip planning over an entire region (that is, Southern California). In addition to the results of the 74 on-line surveys received, data regarding the origin and destination of the transit trips being planned and the time of day of computer access were analyzed for the 2900 successful queries (or requests for trip planning information) which were made during the duration of the survey period. The survey findings indicated that the respondents had a very high opinion of the Go Ventura web site, as the majority found the web site to be very helpful in planning transit trips. The transit trip planner was often being used to plan trips that cross the boundaries of cities, counties, and transit agencies. Thus, it appears that there is a large demand for integrated transit information across the region, and that the Go Ventura web site is successfully responding to that demand. Furthermore, the survey respondents reported making new trips by transit which were directly facilitated by having access to the information provided at the web site. Based on the results of the survey and feedback from users of the web page, the following recommendations were suggested which might further increase the appeal of the transit trip planner found on the Go Ventura web site: ?Allow the transit user to choose preferred transit modes; ?Give the user the option to specify a maximum total walking distance for the trip; ?Furnish the option of specifying a maximum walking distance between transfer points; ?Display total walking distance and travel time associated with each trip itinerary; ?Provide the opportunity to choose a preferred route from an index of available possibilities; ?Generate a map of the proposed travel itinerary; ?Construct a web page with links to schedules maintained by individual transit operators; ?Require that the accuracy of the schedule information contributed to the central database be reviewed periodically by the transit operators which provide that information; and ?Investigate ways to reach individuals without Internet access. |
