This paper presents results of a two-year field test of non-intrusive traffic detection technologies. The project focused primarily on evaluating the traffic data collection capabilities of each device, but also examined the application to ITS and traffic control purposes. Seventeen devices representing seven technologies were evaluated in a variety of environmental and traffic conditions at both intersection and freeway test sites. Emphasis was placed on urban traffic conditions, such as heavy congestion, and performance in the wide variety of weather conditions found in Minnesota. The results show that non-intrusive technologies are capable of performing as well as conventional inductive loops in some but not all situations. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102946. |
