A demonstration project to prove the concept of using very small aperture terminal (VSAT) satellite communications as the sole transmission media to link remote traffic management field elements with more than one central monitoring location was conducted by the California Department of Transportation at the Vincent Thomas Toll Bridge in the port area of Los Angeles. Field elements, such as closed circuit television (CCTV), were deployed at remote sites on the approaches to the Bridge and linked via VSAT satellite communications alternately to two different central monitoring locations to assess both the flexibility and reliability of the satellite communications medium. Use of VSAT satellite communications in the traffic management application has been shown to be viable previously. The concept to use it exclusively to link multiple sites of field elements with more than one central location, though not proven directly, has been shown to be a reasonable possibility. |
