In May 1997 the Intelligent Transportation Society of America submitted a petition to the FCC requesting allocation of the 5.850 - 5.925 GHz band for DSRC use. ARINC, under the Federal Highway Administration Communications Alternatives Test and Evaluation contract, developed a test program to determine the communications characteristics of 5.850 - 5.925 GHz DSRC equipment operated in configurations that would support many of the proposed applications. This paper describes the test methodology and test preparation results of this effort. The configurations that will be used will be similar to those used in applications such as: Electronic Toll Collection (ETC), Access Control, In-vehicle Signing, Traffic Network Performance Monitoring, Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO) Mainline Screening CVO International Border Clearance, CVO Fleet Management and Parking payments. This test program will implement three basic types of tests. Characterization tests provide insight into such as occupied bandwidth, transmitted power, and antenna performance. Performance tests examine the overall communications performance in a particular operational scenario but in a fairly controlled environment. Finally interference tests will assess the separation required between DSRC installations to avoid mutual interference. The equipment will also be used to test the affect of other emitters (such as weather radars) on DSRC operations. Initially, the testing will be performed on CEN prestandard equipment and Japanese prestandard equipment, but other equipment may be tested in the future. |
